Facebook has begun phasing out messaging from its main iOS app. This means users will only be able to "Like" stories or post status updates to their news feed from the original Facebook app. iOS users can download the standalone Facebook Messenger app to directly send messages, images or videos to their friends or family.
If you do not want to download Facebook Messenger, you can access Facebook's mobile website from your mobile browser. Just open Safari (or whatever browser you use on your mobile device) and go to http://www.facebook.com, just like you would on your laptop or PC. From here, you can log in to send Facebook messages on any iOS device. It's not the same experience as using the Facebook app, but it will help remove clutter from your iPhone or iPad.
