The Messages App is an application on your iPhone that allows you to send and receive messages using different technologies.

iMessage - An Apple specific technology that allows you to send and receive texts, photos, videos, and audio messages with Apple device users.
MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) - A new technology supported by all wireless carriers that allows you to send and receive texts, photos, videos, and audio messages with all cellphone users.
SMS (Short Message Service) - An old technology supported by all wireless carriers that allows you to send and receive only text messages limited to 160 characters.
