Most phone numbers in Costa Rica are written in the following formats:

   Prefix: long distance or international
   --------------------------------------
   | Carrier or area code
   | --------------------
   | | Subscriber number
   | | -----------------
   v v v
           SSSS-SSSS - Local format
  +506 SSSS-SSSS - International format

Most telephone numbers in Costa Rica have 8 digits and are written in the format of "SSSS-SSSS". Here are some examples: 2437-2400; 2299-5800.

When dialing locally inside Costa Rica, dial the phone number directly as "SSSS-SSSS". Long distance prefix is not needed.

When dialing from outside of Costa Rica, the international dial-in prefix "+506" is required. So the format becomes "+506 SSSS-SSSS".

When dialing from Costa Rica to other countries, the international dail-out prefix "+" or "00" required.
