What Is International Call Prefix?
What is International Call Prefix?
✍: FYIcenter.com
An international prefix is a digit sequence to be dialed before the destination country or region code when making an international call.
International prefix is also called exit prefix, because it tells the phone system that you want to exit (or get out) of the current country or region first, so that you can continue to dial the destination country code and phone number.
Most countries and regions in the world use the standard international prefix is "00". For example, United Kingdom uses "00" as the international prefix. If you live in United Kingdom with a phone number like "20 7608 0595", and want dial a phone number in United States like "305 889-2373", you need to dial the United Kingdom international prefix first, followed by the United States country code of "1", then the phone number like "00 1 305 889-2373".
However, many countries and regions do not use non-standard international prefixes. For example, United States uses "011" as the international prefix. If you live in United States with a phone number like "305 889-2373", and want dial a phone number in United Kingdom like "20 7608 0595", you need to dial the United States international prefix first, followed by the United Kingdom country code of "44", then the phone number like "011 44 20 7608 0595".
Note that international prefixes are only needed when you making international calls from landline phones. If you are using a mobile phone, you can dial "+" as the international prefix from any country or region. The mobile network will automatically convert "+" to the correct international prefix of the country or region where you are located.
So if you are still using landline phones, you need to remember international prefix of your country or region in order to make international calls. The table below lists international prefixes of different countries and regions:
