What is the meaning of the WEEE Directive Icon on my phone?

If you see an icon of a garbage can with an X through it on the back cover of your phone, or in the phone manual, it is a WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive used in EU (European Union), indicating that phone should be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way, rather than thrown in the trash as electronic waste.
